Applications
WiMAX/Wi-Fi
Wireless security has now standardized on the AES-CCM algorithm which is correctly defined as AES in Counter
Mode for the encryption algorithm and Cipher Block Chaining Message Authentication for message
authentication. AES-CCM was developed for 802.11i as a secure alternative to the fatally flawed WEP. AES-CCM now finds
application in 802.11 WiFi, UWB and WiMedia, and 802.16 WiMAX.
Elliptic has developed a portfolio of products aimed at the 802.16 standard. These products also provide
DES support for legacy compatibility.
For higher offload capacity, most customers consider the security PDU processor which receives plaintext 802.16 packets and control information at an input FIFO and presents ciphertext packets through an output FIFO and vice versa. There
are two product variants; one which is capable of supporting both 802.16-2004 fixed WiMAX and 802.16e-2006 mobile WiMAX applications and
its companion core offers support for the new WiMAX mobile profile published by the WiMAX Forum The product briefs can be found below:
