Management Team

Elliptic is pleased to have a solid management team that has been involved with many successful start-ups as well as medium and large cap companies in high technology. Spanning semiconductor capabilities, networking skills and security competence, the company management is one of the best among start-ups anywhere in North America.

Richard White, President and CEO
Richard has more than 27 years of experience in technology companies. Richard was a former CEO of Solidum and Accelerix and acted as a contract CEO to Intelligent Photonics Control and Spectalis. He has provided consultant services to a number of technology companies including Seaway Networks, Wavesat and Ad Opt. Richard started his career as a semiconductor engineer during the early days of Mitel. He has also worked at NovAtel Communications, Extreme Packet Devices and Enhance Systems in a variety of senior management roles. He holds a B. Eng Electrical Engineering from Carleton and an Executive MBA (PMD60) from Harvard.

Rick Shorkey, Chief Financial Officer
Rick Shorkey is a Chartered Accountant with more than 25 years of industry background filling senior financial and general management roles. He currently provides part-time and interim CFO services to technology companies (primarily start-ups) and has been involved with Elliptic since November 2004. He has broad experience (private to public and small to large companies; software to semiconductors). In the last 10 years he has held CFO positions with several start-ups including: Bitflash Inc. (SVG software) where he played a key role in re-organizing and re-financing the company and its sale to a public entity; ATMOS Corporation (semiconductor embedded memory IP) where he played a key role in various financings and the sale of the company to a U.S. based public corporation; GMSI Inc. (formerly Gandalf Mobile Systems Inc.) which was a world leader in mobile data communications for the transportation industry.

Stephen Yee, VP Sales
Stephen has more than fifteen years of experience in the semiconductor and EDA industries and over ten years of sales experience. He most recently served as vice president of international sales at Numerical Technologies, which was subsequently acquired by Synopsys. Prior to that, Stephen was a charter member and vice president of international sales with Cadabra Design Automation, which later merged with Numerical. Stephen also worked at LSI Logic over an eight year period, where he held key management positions in sales, strategic marketing, and engineering. He holds a B. Eng degree in electrical engineering from Concordia University.

Mike Borza, CTO
Mike is responsible for strategic direction at Elliptic. He is an active contributor to the Security Task Group of IEEE 802.1 and is Editor of the 802.1AR Secure Device Identifier standard. Mike's career spans more than eighteen years in high technology. Prior to co-founding Elliptic, Mike was a founder and CTO of Startle Networks, a manufacturer of Internet security appliances for SSL VPN and e-commerce applications. At Chrysalis-ITS (now Safenet), Mike worked with customers of the Luna series of network security processors as Director of IC Applications Engineering. In 1995, Mike co-founded American Biometrics, acquired in 2001 by ActivCard. Mike's early career was in the Toronto area, where he was in safety-critical systems engineering at Alcatel Canada, and held a variety of design and management positions at optoelectronics manufacturer Antel Optronics. In addition to his roles at Elliptic, Mike is a founding director of business networking forum The Ottawa Network.

Al Hawtin, VP Marketing and Business Development
Al is an accomplished marketing and product management professional with more than 20 years of experience in the global high-tech industry spanning both the Semiconductor and Networking markets. He spent four years with Intel in a sales capacity, ten years with Mitel Semiconductor in senior marketing and product management roles, seven years with Newbridge Networks as Vice-President and General Manager and two years as VP Marketing and Sales at ATMOS Corporation - a memory SIP company acquired by MoSys.

Patrick Offers, VP of Engineering
Patrick has twenty years of semiconductor engineering experience, and comes from an engineering and operations background at Mitel Semiconductor (now Zarlink) with over fourteen years in Test engineering, CAD, and IS, with several years managing the Design Capabilities and Methods group. He moved to Nortel Microelectronics Division for three years where he advised on advanced IC Design Methodology and managed a mixed-signal design tools group. He then moved to Chrysalis-ITS, where he built and lead an engineering team delivering modular security/cryptography solutions using advanced SOC techniques into advanced processes. Patrick has built and led multiple high-performing engineering teams in a variety of applications.
